We appear to be witnessing a rising pattern at Warner Bros Discovery: the development of a television series and a feature situated in the same imaginary universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner is producing at least one feature film set in the Game of Thrones movie universe, which has hitherto only been produced as a TV series.
Is this a surprise move? Perhaps not. After all, it is consistent with other contemporary Warner Bros. movies. The Penguin, a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, has debuted on Max. Dune: Prophecy, a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s films about Paul Atreides, will be released on the platform in November. A new Harry Potter series adaptation for television is also in the works. And don’t forget that Warner released two theatrical Sex and the City pictures years ago, continuing the tale from the cult series.
Apparently, those in charge of Warner Bros. have decided to develop their brands in the same way that Disney has grown the MCU and the Star Wars universe. Popular franchises with both filmic and series stories are expected to assist Warner, which is facing financial difficulties, in competing with other firms in the cinematic and streaming industries.
What can we expect from a feature film set in George Martin’s universe? We compile all of the details and rumors about the new Warner Bros. project.
When could the Game of Thrones movie premiere?
According to sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter, the project is still in its early phases of production, with Warner Bros having yet to choose a writer or director.
Given that the script does not even exist, fans of George Martin’s universe must be patient; the film will not be in theaters anytime soon.
Assuming Warner Bros. picks a screenwriter in the coming months, work on the script may begin in 2025. Filmmakers require approximately six months for pre-production (casting, location scouting, wardrobe preparation), two to three months for filming, and six to twelve months for post-production and marketing. Taking all of this into consideration, a Game of Thrones film may release in theaters in late 2027 – at the
What could the plot of the Game of Thrones movie involve?
The film’s plot is currently unknown. However, based on prior Warner Bros plans, fan expectations, and Game of Thrones underdeveloped threads, we have a few ideas regarding the film’s premise.
Game of Thrones season 8 remake
Many fans believe that if Warner Bros. produces a film in the Game of Thrones universe, it should be a replica of the controversial Season 8.
The issues with the series produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss began a few seasons earlier, but the terrible decisions and rushed storytelling erupted in the final season.
It’s worth noting that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had originally planned to make three feature films instead of season 8, and George Martin himself was interested in the notion back in 2014.
A film version of Game of Thrones’ eighth season is certainly appealing; nonetheless, it is doubtful. The studio executives and writing duo insisted that they were satisfied with the series’ conclusion and had no plans to replicate it.
The further adventures of Jon Snow
Warner Bros. had previously announced plans to make a Game of Thrones spin-off series dubbed Snow, but the idea was shortly abandoned. However, there is a chance that Warner Bros would revive the concept, but as a feature film rather than a series.
Such a film could alleviate some of the remaining fan dissatisfaction caused by the series conclusion. We all recall how Jon became almost inconsequential after seasons of establishing his character as central to the tale. George Martin enjoys playing with his readers’ expectations, and Jon’s destiny in the novels is likely to be tragic and unfair. However, considering all the flaws in the Game of Thrones climax, Jon’s storyline feels especially unsatisfactory.
The film may depict Jon on a fresh mission beyond the Wall, in a land with many secrets. However, one must realize that Jon’s new experiences will never be as exciting as a high-stakes war with the White Walkers. So, perhaps Warner Bros. should go wild and revive the Night King plot line in the film, allowing Jon a second chance to play Azor Ahai? That would be a daring move, but not very likely.
The origin story of the White Walkers
Aside from the Jon Snow series, Warner Bros. has been developing many Game of Thrones spin-offs. House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 are now in production, while Aegon Conquest, 10,000 Ships, Nine Voyages, and an animation set in Yi Ti are in the early stages of creation.
However, Warner Bros. scrapped the Bloodmoon series. This epic story was set in the Age of Heroes, thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. The era began with the alliance between the First Men and the Children of the Forest and was characterized by the Long Night and the fight against the White Walkers.
Interestingly, HBO had already created a pilot for the series, but the entire project was ultimately canceled. However, reviving Bloodmoon as a film would be a terrific idea because it would transport us to familiar locations but at unfamiliar times. A story about the creation of the White Walkers would be clearly related to the Game of Thrones plot, but the scriptwriters might also create new characters rather than reusing familiar ones.
The further adventures of Arya Stark
At the end of Game of Thrones, Arya resolved to explore the lands west of Westeros. George Martin’s works are mute on what lies beyond the continent’s western coasts, where the Sunset Sea has yet to be crossed. This is not to say that no one has ever attempted.
Thousands of years before Aegon’s Conquest, a King in the North called Brandon the Shipwright traveled to the West, but never returned. Several decades after the Targaryen appeal, a noblewoman named Elissa Farman set out over the Sunset Sea. She discovered three fascinating islands but opted to continue sailing west. Years later, Corlys Velaryon said that he saw Elissa’s old ship in Essos, implying that the Game of Thrones globe is round and that Elissa circumnavigated it.
In addition to Westeros and Essos, George Martin’s world includes two other continents. Ulthos is unexplored in the far east, whereas Sothoryos, a land of many terrors, is located south of Essos. As a result, a film about Arya’s sailing experiences has great potential for expanding George Martin’s world.
The tale of Aegon’s Conquest
Warner Bros. is known for changing plans, so one of the announced Game of Thrones prequels could be released as a film rather than a television series. The story of Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros with his sisters and three dragons would make an excellent film.
The plot of Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys’ campaign in Westeros is very uncomplicated, making it suitable for a feature film. Furthermore, a war including dragons (including Balerion the Black Dread and Vhagar!) would look fantastic on a huge screen.
