OnePlus smartphones: understanding the range to make the best decision

You want to buy a OnePlus smartphone but are confused by the manufacturer’s new product lines? Here are our recommendations for the best OnePlus phone for you.

THE BEST ONEPLUS SMARTPHONES OF 2022

Gone are the days when the OnePlus lineup consisted of only one phone. Since its amazing debut, the brand has enjoyed rapid development and established itself as a formidable competitor. However, there have been significant changes since 2020, including the resignation of its historic co-founder, Carl Pei, and the merging of its R&D with Oppo and Realme.

However, the first significant changes are beginning to be felt, the first of which being the discontinuation of OxygenOS by 2022. What causes some fans to worry about the brand’s and its devices’ loss of individuality.

The OnePlus 9 Pro was one of our favorite smartphones of 2021, and it was the brand’s first handset that was actually capable of competing with the finest at the high end. As a result, we awaited his replacement with bated breath. Although the design is not very unique, it is effective and, most all, incredibly comfortable in the hand. We were particularly struck by the handling of the back face. Excellent point about the picture module, which does not stick out too much. However, there is one drawback: it lacks IP sealing certification. Given the price, this is a serious shortcoming.

The AMOLED screen, as expected from OnePlus, is of high quality, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. However, in terms of brightness and colorimetry, it falls slightly short of the best on the market. Without being innovative, the speakers perform admirably.

Internally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has no surprises in terms of performance: it’s superb. However, after a few tens of minutes of play, there is a warmth that is accompanied with performance throttling. As a result, it is preferable to keep the rapid charger on hand. In just 20 minutes, the latter manages to charge 73% of the battery.

The picture, a brand’s usual weak area, works well here. There are three sensors, which work effectively both day and night. The camera doesn’t have any serious problems, but it also doesn’t stand out in any way. This is not a criticism: we are in the presence of an excellent photo module.

This feeling extends to the OnePlus 10 Pro in general: it is a fantastic phone with exceptional value for money, but it does not arrive to change the market. As a result, it stands out as a secure bet in this price range.

Following the absence of a previous generation, the OnePlus 10 T is now available. Despite its high-end status, the phone makes various sacrifices, most notably the picture or even the deletion of the Alert Slider. Aside from this removal, the mobile’s design remains rather traditional.

Oneplus 10T

Its main selling feature is the existence of the Snapdragon 8 + Gen 1 processor. This super-powerful CPU, along with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, allows for more than adequate computational capability for common workloads. But it’s in the gaming department where the OnePlus 10T really shines: it can run any game without a hitch.

In terms of battery life, the phone has a respectable 4800 mAh capacity. The 10T can thus endure a full day of use with moderate use. The amazing 150W quick charge takes you up to 100% in just 30 minutes.

The OnePlus 9 was announced alongside the OnePlus 9 Pro to cover the gap between the latter and the OnePlus 8T, which was introduced in 2020 but is still available. Although it resembles its bigger sibling, it has significantly less polished finishes and a plastic frame rather than an aluminum frame. Because it is warmer, the latter is more susceptible to scratches but also more comfortable in the hand. Another casualty is the IP68 designation, which is also becoming obsolete.

This smartphone offers a bright and precisely calibrated 120 Hz AMOLED screen. However, unlike the 9 Pro, it is not adaptable. Aside from that last point.

OnePlus 9

On the performance front, there is nothing to complain about; the now-familiar Snapdragon 888 performs admirably. However, autonomy is substantially lower than on the 9 Pro, owing to the non-adaptive screen. We won’t last more than a day. A flaw offset by the rapid charge, which refuels in 30 minutes. Wireless charging is still available, however it is slower, using the standard QI 15 W standard.

The photo module, which is always designed with Hasselblad in mind, performs a fine job, although the cost-cutting sacrifices are noticeable. The wide-angle lens no longer benefits from optical stabilization, while the telephoto lens just disappears. The same selfie worries may be seen on its larger brother.

Do you want the OnePlus 9 Pro but your budget won’t allow it? The OnePlus 9 is now available. It foregoes numerous comfort features (waterproofing, rapid wireless charging, and so on), but it retains top performance and a really great screen. If its features are undeniable, it is tough to justify the 220 dollars price difference with the OnePlus 8T, which is still available.

OnePlus had struck gold with the first Nord of the moniker, effectively repositioning itself in the mid-range market. The Nord 2 was thus all the more anticipated at the turn, given that the Nord N10 and Nord N100 had been huge failures.

The design develops in tiny ways yet remains consistent. We do, however, notice the shift to a single selfie sensor and a bigger photo block. The remainder of the smartphone is well-finished and, above all, comfortable to hold. While it remains usually accurate, the AMOLED screen does not impress as much as it did last year. As a result, the refresh rate remains at 90 Hz, and the brightness is merely ordinary. Nothing surprising, but also nothing humiliating.

On the SoC front, we switch from Qualcomm to MediaTek, with a Dimensity 1200 — IA that impresses with its high performance. On paper, it’s one of the most powerful smartphones in its class, but it’s still a notch below the Xiaomi Poco F3.

The camera is most likely the phone’s weakest link. Even if the overall results are right, the overly saturated rendering, like the excessive compression, will certainly not like everyone.

If it does not arrive to change the market, the OnePlus Nord 2 honorably replaces its predecessor. It is well-balanced and provides excellent value for money. Unfortunately, the photo prevents it from becoming a true must.

The Nord 2 T is a new model of the Nord 2 by OnePlus. Several technical advancements are planned, beginning with a quick charge at 80W, which may persuade some to choose this model instead.

OnepLUS Nord 2T

This Nord 2T has a design and proportions that are remarkably similar to those of its predecessor. There is a 6.43-inch AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz (not adaptive, unfortunately). Unlike the 10T, which lost the Alert Slider, we can discover this dedicated button to turn to quiet mode on the right side.

On the photographic front, it has three lenses: a 50 Mp wide-angle sensor, an ultra-wide angle sensor, and a depth sensor. It performs admirably, with particularly effective color control.

The Nord 2T is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 processor, which excels at 3D gaming. This smartphone has no power issues. Even though it proves to be quite adaptable in usage, the Nord 2’s successor falls short in one area: autonomy, which falls short of 10 hours. Fortunately, the 80W quick charge can charge the battery completely in around 30 minutes. We are also disappointed by the lack of IP certification.

OnePlus continues to drop the Nord “CE” for “Community Edition” lineup, which was launched last year with the Nord N10 and N100. Here, the company is not attempting to manufacture an ultra-low-cost model, but rather to introduce a model with an intriguing quality-price ratio that is obviously aimed at the Xiaomi market.

OnePlus Nord CE

The end result is a tiny and light smartphone that feels great in the hand. The AMOLED display has a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The panel itself provides accurate colors and brightness, but it falls short of what Xiaomi offers at this price point. We also regret that the glass is easily scratched.

The range decline from the original Nord continues at the CPU level, as we are entitled to a Snapdragon 750 G. The chip’s performance remains robust, allowing you to play in decent conditions by reducing the degree of detail a little. The autonomy is mixed: it lasts two days without issue, but the rapid charge is very ordinary, taking an hour to refill.

The company is at it again, this time with a new version of the OnePlus Nord CE. Following in the footsteps of Xiaomi, the CE 2 delivers a technical sheet focused at the quality/price ratio.

This phone gives the sense of a gadget with robust roots but does not reinvent the category. This begins with a traditional design that is easy to hold. Grip and ergonomics are prioritized for a positive everyday user experience.

First and foremost, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 features a stunning 6.43-inch AMOLED display. It has a Full HD Plus resolution and a maximum adaptive refresh rate of 90 Hz. Overall, they are good performances, with true brightness and hues that are similar to reality.

As is customary with OnePlus devices, internal power is a crucial consideration. The animation is handled by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 CPU. This is complemented with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, providing more than adequate performance. The 4500 mAh battery provides a full day of trouble-free use. Fast charging allows for 75% battery charge in 20 minutes.

However, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 has the same issue as its predecessor. Even with its three lenses, the picture section is still too small. If the main sensor is good, the shoe pinches especially in the device’s versatility. The phone, which costs 279 dollars, has been on the market since March 2022. It now runs OxygenOS 11, which is based on Android 11, however the manufacturer has stated that an upgrade to Android 12 for this smartphone will be available soon.

BEFORE MAKING YOUR ONEPLUS SMARTPHONE SELECTION :

  • WHO IS ONEPLUS?

Pete Lau and Carl Pei founded the company at the end of 2013, and it has always been a part of the BBK Electronics universe (Oppo, Realme, Vivo…). It established itself in its early days with an innovative marketing model centered on invitation sales and devices with an unrivaled price-quality ratio.

It recently returned to the parent company’s fold, with deeper integration, particularly in terms of research.

  • WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF ONEPLUS?

OnePlus’ founding idea is to provide “flagship killers,” or extremely powerful smartphones at incomparable costs. Despite the fact that it is clearly no longer the only player in this market, the company continues to provide products with an excellent price-performance ratio.

  • WHAT ARE ONEPLUS’ WEAKNESSES?

The shortcomings of each smartphone differ based on the model, but in general, we may blame them for photography flaws. The photo section is indeed less impressive than what the competition has to offer at the top of the spectrum. However, the brand’s reputation improves with each generation.
