Your dogs and pussycats will now be able to purchase prescription drugs from Amazon. Amazon says that “hundreds of prescription pet medications,” including treatments for fleas, ticks, and chronic diseases, will now be accessible for US customers to purchase via Amazon’s shop thanks to its Vetsource agreement, which was announced on Thursday.
By using Amazon’s search box to find the necessary medication and entering the details of your prescribing veterinarian at checkout, you can find prescription pet medications. Medication ordered through Amazon will subsequently be dispensed and delivered by the Vetsource online pet pharmacy service; shipment should take two to six days.
For first orders, Vetsource will get in touch with your veterinarian for permission; however, if your account has an active prescription on file, Amazon claims that refills can then “usually be processed without additional veterinarian contact.” The FDA has authorized every pet medication that Amazon offers, and the business promises to increase the range of treatments it offers in the future.
The selling point here, much like when Amazon originally introduced its human-focused online pharmacy service in 2020, is convenience. Being able to order flea, worming, and other necessary pet care prescriptions with everyday shopping items is helpful for everyone, but especially folks who have mobility challenges or reside in remote areas and would otherwise have to make their way to a vet’s office or drugstore site. Additionally, it aligns Amazon with other online pharmacy services like Walmart, which in 2019 introduced its own pet pharmaceutical service.
