The year has seen plenty of AI developments, but if I had to pick one that has changed my everyday life in 2024, it would be ChatGPT search. OpenAI’s decision to incorporate live “ChatGPT search” capabilities into ChatGPT has been nothing short of revolutionary, profoundly transforming how I interact with the internet and seek information.
While Google has been a constant for decades, I’ve found myself using ChatGPT’s search functions significantly more frequently—and it’s clear to see why. Here’s why ChatGPT search has become my favorite AI tool of the year, and why I believe it will alter how we use existing search engines by 2025.
Search reimagined
One of the reasons ChatGPT search has won me over is its ability to discern intent. Unlike standard search engines, which rely mainly on keywords, ChatGPT understands the intricacies of natural language. I can ask a question exactly as it comes to mind and get an accurate answer.
This is very handy for multipart searches. If I’m arranging a trip, I may ask, “What are some family-friendly activities to do in San Francisco in April, and where should I stay for easy access to those activities?”
Google will most likely divide this query into two results: one for attractions and another for hotels. ChatGPT links the dots, responding holistically and saves me the effort of piecing information together.

Traditional search engines, such as Google or Bing, are quite good at finding links, but they still require me to browse through results, piece together information, and hope I click on the correct source. ChatGPT search completely alters the game by providing contextual, short, and personalized responses to exactly what I’m asking.
Instead of putting a question into Google and browsing through 12 different links, I can ask ChatGPT to not only retrieve the information, but also summarize, understand, and provide pertinent insights. Whether I need the latest news, a detailed explanation of a hard issue, or precise product recommendations, ChatGPT search cuts through the clutter.
For example, if I ask Google, “What’s the best smartwatch for runners in 2024?” I’ll probably get a combination of commercials, articles, and reviews. It’s difficult to know which queries to trust, especially because some are sponsored. Then it’s up to me to sort through everything, cross-check sources, and make sense of opposing viewpoints.
ChatGPT search, on the other hand, sorts through the clutter. It recognizes the context of my question, takes into account my needs, and gives a tailored response with the most recent updates in a conversational, digestible format.
Real-time information in a flash
Previously, ChatGPT relied on a set knowledge base, which meant that its responses could be out of date, irritating anyone looking for breaking news or recent occurrences. Now that OpenAI has integrated real-time search features, ChatGPT can retrieve up-to-date information from the web.
This has been a game changer for me, especially when I need rapid answers regarding current events, local businesses, or other information. If I want to stay up to date on the newest AI advances, sports scores, or a major news story, I don’t have to scroll through endless headlines. ChatGPT collects relevant, timely information, summarizes it, and keeps me up to date.
For example, during the election, I asked ChatGPT for updates and comments. Not only did it summarise relevant news pieces, but it also provided a fair analysis of the issue, which a typical search engine would not have done without significant effort from my end.
Goodbye ads, hello answers
Let’s face it: Google has become an advertising quagmire. Searching for anything slightly commercial—such as product comparisons or travel recommendations—requires wading through a sea of sponsored links before discovering genuine content. ChatGPT search provides a refreshing alternative. Its answers are ad-free (for the time being), uncluttered, and entirely focused on answering my question, rather than delivering me a marketing pitch.
This adjustment is especially effective when I’m making purchasing selections. For example, if I want to know the best hiking boots for a given climate or terrain, ChatGPT will compile an answer from many websites without attempting to upsell me. It feels like I’m having a conversation with a buddy who is assisting me with my study, rather than an algorithm looking to monetise my clicks.
It’s free, like Google
Perhaps the most significant decision OpenAI made this year was to make ChatGPT search free for all users. Previously, real-time search was only available to paying GPT-4 customers, but now anyone can use this powerful function.
This democratization of AI-powered search is a huge thing. This breakthrough is not limited to tech aficionados or expert users; anybody looking for smarter, faster search skills can benefit.
For those who rely largely on search engines, this move levels the field. It allows users to access real-time, AI-curated content without any boundaries.
The future of search
While Google remains dominating for the time being, it is evident that the way we search for information is changing, and ChatGPT Search is at the forefront of this trend. It’s speedier, more intuitive, and much less cluttered than its traditional competitors. It has become a tool that I use on a regular basis, whether I need quick statistics, personalized recommendations, or breaking news.
This breakthrough represents the future of search: AI-powered, user-centered, and focused on providing answers rather than just links.
In a year full of AI developments, ChatGPT search stands out as my favorite because it addresses real-world issues and significantly changes how I obtain information. It feels like a logical extension of search and a collaborative process with AI, where I ask queries and receive intelligent responses, real-time answers.
