How to install Google Gemini on your phone

Google didn’t spend any time at this year’s annual I/O developer conference discussing Android or making any jokes about Pixels. Rather, the whole first speech addressed the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, mainly through Google Gemini, a multimodal large language model (LLM) that was introduced in late 2023 and is currently accessible to users on a variety of platforms—that is, if they live in a nation where it is.

How to get Google Gemini on your phone

You may download Google Gemini for free from the Google Play Store if you live in one of the supported countries. It’s important to note that some locations do not offer the unpaid tier, therefore if you wish to use the app, you will need to pay £18.99/$19.99 every month.

Just search for “Google Gemini” in the Play Store and choose “Install” next to the appropriate result to begin downloading it. Given its small size of 1.46 MB, it won’t take long at all.

How to switch back to the Google Assistant

It’s simple to go back to Gemini if you want to use Google Assistant-specific features like Routines, if you like the interface and user experience, or if you just don’t like Gemini on-device. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the Google Gemini app.
  • Tap on your Google account profile icon in the top corner of the screen.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap on ‘Digital assistants from Google’ at the bottom of the Gemini settings list.
  • Tap on Google Assistant
  • Tap ‘Switch’ on the subsequent pop-up prompt.
  • You’ll be taken back to your device’s home screen with the Google Assistant reinstated.

How to access Google Gemini on iPhone

If you live outside of a supported market, there is currently no simple method to access the Google Gemini through the Google iOS app, but you may at least add a web app shortcut to your home screen.

  • Navigate to gemini.google.com on your iPhone’s web browser.
  • Once loaded (also make sure you’re signed in with your Google account), tap iOS’ share icon.
  • On the subsequent share card, scroll until you find ‘Add to Home Screen’ and tap that.
  • You’ll then be able to tweak the shortcut’s name, before tapping ‘Add’ in the corner of the screen.
  • A shortcut to the Google Gemini web app will then live on your iPhone’s home screen.

It’s important to remember that user interfaces for Gemini will surely evolve over time. Google may try to integrate the experience on Android more thoroughly, and it’s possible that a standalone Gemini app will eventually take the place of the Google app on iOS. However, for the time being, the corporation appears to be more focused on developing its AI efforts than satisfying EU regulators.
