Quest Pro 2 VR Headset Reportedly Canceled by Meta

According to a fresh source, the Meta Quest Pro 2 is no longer being developed and will not be released. Though the parent company is working on other Meta Quest headsets, the follow-up to its most expensive and powerful headset to date may be discontinued.

Despite its most well-known product, Facebook, Meta is responsible for one of the best virtual reality headset lines ever created. The Oculus Quest, now known as Meta Quest, is a series of entirely wireless VR headsets that allow users to enjoy them without the need for sensors, cameras, or PC connections. When the initial Oculus Quest debuted, it was innovative for its time, and while the Meta Quest Pro has struggled to find a market, the basic Quest series continues to perform well for the firm.

According to a tip from The Information via UploadVR, the Meta Quest Pro 2 has been canceled. According to the article, Mark Zuckerberg and CTO Andrew Bosworth asked for the halt of development during a recent product review meeting. Bosworth accepted the report, stating that projects and prototypes are regularly shelved at Meta and are merely part of the development process. Although he did not confirm whether the follow-up to the Meta Quest Pro has been totally postponed, his statement appears to confirm that the accusations have some legitimacy.

Why Was the Meta Quest Pro 2 Allegedly Canceled?

While the Meta Quest Pro 2 would have undoubtedly enhanced the platform’s graphic fidelity and overall performance, its apparent cancellation could be attributed to the performance of its predecessor. Despite price reductions, the Meta Quest Pro has not sold well for the company. While it has superb specifications, the Meta Quest Pro’s price of $1000 or more has certainly put off regular consumers, and it’s unclear whether enterprises ever adopted it as Meta had planned. With its emphasis on business applications, it’s plausible that the Meta Quest Pro might have sold better if it had been released during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many workers were stranded at home and forced to telecommute.

However, this does not mark the end of virtual reality headgear. Whether the Meta Quest Pro 2 was genuinely canceled or not, the normal Meta Quest series remains popular, with a more affordable price point and a selection of appealing apps and games for gamers to enjoy, such as Resident Evil 4 VR. Currently, it is believed that the Meta Quest 3S, a more economical variant of the standard Meta Quest 3, is in production, and that Meta Quest 4 will be published in the future, but possibly not for many years. Fans will have to wait and see what happens next with Meta’s VR vision, but for the time being, the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro are the company’s most powerful devices.
