The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the company’s newest flagship smartwatch. The design of the Ultra 2 appears to be very identical to that of the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, implying that the most substantial update is on the inside.
Like the new Series 9, the Ultra 2 will be powered by Apple’s S9 SiP, which has 5.6 billion transistors, a four-core neural engine, and a U2 ultra wideband location chip. This will allow for additional sophisticated capabilities such as on-device Siri processing and more accurate location monitoring.
On the exterior, the watch boasts a brighter display than the previous Ultra model, rated at 3,000 nits, which Apple claims is the brightest display ever on an Apple Watch. When the smartphone is in low-power mode, Apple promises that it will last 72 hours. The casing is now composed of 95% recycled titanium.
While the Ultra’s hardware has been improved, watchOS 10, which introduces widgets, revamped app iconography, and new mapping and cycling functions to the watch interface, will be the largest update for Apple Watch users this year. Modular Ultra, a new watchface, will make use of the display’s outside border. A new double-tap gesture will make it easier for consumers to start and stop phone calls.
The Ultra 2 is now available for presale for $799 and will arrive on September 22nd. Apple unveiled the new watch as part of their “Wonderlust” launch event at Apple Park in Cupertino. Apple Watch Series 9 and the less expensive SE were both announced.
