Meta Quest 3 release date, specs and final prices just leaked ahead of Connect

The Meta Quest 3 should be available at Meta Connect later this week. But, owing to a flurry of leaks and updates in the run-up to Connect on September 27, we may finally know when you can get your hands on it (and what’s inside).

First and foremost, Quest 3 is now scheduled to be released on October 10. This suggests that the new VR headset should be available roughly two weeks after it debuts at Meta Connect. This rumor is based on a Tweet from Lunayian on Twitter (X) and an anonymous source at GameStop. So while this isn’t a certainty, it appears that this report is very genuine.

The promotional materials sent to Lunayian by this source most likely verified the cost for Meta’s two Meta Quest 3 models. The first, the 128GB variant, costs $499, which we already knew from Meta’s prior disclosures.

According to reportedly leaked Gamestop advertising materials, the second Quest 3 variant will cost $649. According to a recent spec sheet leak, this $649 variant will include 512GB of storage.

But it isn’t the only pricing news that has surfaced. In a certain places, Meta has officially cut the pricing of the basic 128GB device (h/t Mixed News). The 128GB pricing has fallen from €569.99 to €549.99 in the EU, and from £499.99 to £479.99 in the UK. It’s unclear why these costs have reduced, but it’ll be a good sight for European buyers.

Additional Meta Quest 3 specs leak

Earlier this month, a specifications leak disclosed much of what we didn’t previously know, including RAM and a 512GB storage capacity. However, a fresh Reddit specifications leak calls the original leak into doubt.

According to Redditor u/JMS1717, the Quest 3 will have 8GB RAM instead of the 12GB suggested by the previous leak (h/t Mixed News). If accurate, this is disheartening, especially given that the Meta Quest Pro came with 12GB of RAM, thus there was precedence for Meta to use 12GB rather than 8GB.

Aside from that, there isn’t anything disclosed by this spec sheet (apparently an official piece of Meta marketing material) that we didn’t previously know. The only new information is the specifications for the “High-fidelity, full-color passthrough powered by Meta Reality.” According to the specifications leak, the passthrough will be 4MP color video passthrough with 18 pixels per degree resolution. The 18 PPD figure is expected to be related to the video passthrough feature and not the same PPD figure to expect while wearing the headset in virtual reality, which should be greater.

Everything else only verified what we already suspected. The display is an LCD with pancake lenses that achieves 2.2K resolution (2064 x 2208 pixels per eye), and the Quest 3 will most likely be powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, which Meta claims will “have twice the graphics performance” of the XR2 Gen 1 that powered the Meta Quest 2.

Keep an eye on our Meta Quest 3 coverage for additional information as it becomes available, including from Meta Connect Today Wednesday, September 27 later.
