Sony made a statement this week with the unveiling of the PS5 Pro and its exorbitant $700/£700 price tag. While many gamers will be debating whether to buy or avoid the most powerful PlayStation ever “Nintendo Switch 2”, another gaming behemoth is on the horizon.
Of course, I’m referring to the Nintendo Switch 2 and the growing reports that it is soon to launch and take its place among the top handheld game consoles. For example, Discord user moistycharlie posted a tempting comment on the GTA VI server implying that the Big N’s next machine is only a few weeks away.
Hat tip to Reddit for screenshotting this one, but Nintendo’s Switch 2 is expected to be launched early next month with a basic price of $400. In addition, moistycharlie believes the console will be available in two distinct SKUs.
Should you believe this leak, withdraw $400 from your checking account and take October off work? Of course not, we’re talking about the internet.
On the other hand, we’re bringing this leak to your attention because the same user accurately anticipated the PS5 Pro’s launch date and price before it happened. However, as the old adage goes, past performance does not guarantee future success, so be cautious.
The concept of two SKUs appears to be a solid bet. It might serve as the foundation for two Switch 2 devices: one that is entirely digital and another, possibly more expensive, that includes a slot for physical cartridges. As the world evolves more, PlayStation and Xbox have embraced this method.
However, the $400 price point (which will most likely be a straight £400 in the UK and a corresponding AU$ pricing in Australia) is an interesting topic of discussion. The first Switch cost $299 and included an LCD screen and 32GB of on-board storage. The follow-up OLED variant increased the price to $349. So it doesn’t seem out of the question that Nintendo would raise the price of the Switch 2 to $400 due to the enhanced specifications.
Nintendo has long abandoned a power race with the PlayStation and Xbox. But there’s no disputing that following the PS5 Pro with a new console that’s roughly half the price and features a slew of first-party exclusives could help Nintendo gain a few more gamers.
