AMD unveiled its new Ryzen CPUs and Radeon graphics chips for LAPTOPS in 2023. Keep an eye out for specifics.
At CES 2023, Intel unveiled its 13th generation CPUs for portable PCs. Nvidia has unveiled the Geforce RTX 4000. AMD didn’t waste any time in responding with two caps at the same event. Still, for laptops, the company introduces both new CPUs and new graphics chips.
AMD RYZEN 7045HX CHIPS TO COMPETE WITH INTEL
On the chip front, we now have the Ryzen 7045HX series, which is based on AMD Zen 4 and is designed for the most efficient compact PCs. The chips in the range, which are engraved in 5 nm by TSMC, can incorporate up to 16 hearts and 32 threads and will enable DDR5 memory.
Remember that Intel introduced a mobile processor with 24 hearts, but only 8 high-performance hearts and 16 low-consumption hearts. The number isn’t everything.
Model | Hearts / Treads | Base / Boost frequency | Hiding | TDP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ryzen 5 7645HX | 6/12 | 4.0 / 5.0 GHz | 38 MB | 45-75W + |
Ryzen 7 7745HX | 8/16 | 3.6 / 5.1 GHz | 40 MB | 45-75W + |
Ryzen 9 7845HX | 12/24 | 3.0 / 5.2 GHz | 76 MB | 45-75W + |
Ryzen 9 7945HX | 16/32 | 2.5 / 5.4 GHz | 80 MB | 55-75W + |
According to AMD, the finest chip in the bunch, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, could give an extra 18% thread performance and 78% multithread performance when compared to a Ryzen 6900HX from the previous generation.
The first portable PCs with these CPUs will be available in February 2023 from Asus, Alienware, Lenovo, and MSI.
AI FOR RYZEN 7040 PROCESSORS
Ryzen 7040 CPUs now have AI-specific technology, which AMD claims will allow them to outperform Apple M2 performance. Microsoft is promoting AI-assisted applications such as real-time image processing for webcams, and it is logical for AMD and Intel to improve their processor performance for these applications.
RYZEN 7040 HS: HIGH PERFORMANCE PROCESSORS
AMD’s HS CPUs compete with Intel’s P series processors. These are ultraportable CPUs that do not rely on finesse but rather on a balance of autonomy and performance.
Model | Hearts / Treads | Base / Boost frequency | Hiding | TDP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ryzen 5 7640HS | 6/12 | 4.3 / 5.0 GHz | 38 MB | 35-45W |
Ryzen 7,7840HS | 8/16 | 3.8 / 5.1 GHz | 40 MB | 35-45W |
Ryzen 9 7940HS | 8/16 | 4.0 / 5.2 GHz | 40 MB | 35-45W |
This CPU family will have up to eight Zen 4 cores and an RDNA 3 graphics unit, all in 4 nm. AMD offers up to 34% higher multithread performance against the MacBook Pro M1 Pro, and up to 21% more video gaming performance versus the 12th generation Intel.
The first portable PCs using these CPUs will be available in March 2023.

ULTRAPORTABLE CHIPS DO NOT PASS TO ZEN 4
AMD is also introducing a new line of U-series processors aimed at the best and least energy-consuming ultraportable. Surprisingly, despite the name change, this range does not pass to the new architecture.
Model | Architecture | Hearts / Treads | Base / Boost frequency | Hiding | TDP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ryzen 3 7330U | Zen 3 | 6/12 | 2.3 / 4.3 GHz | 10 MB | 15W |
Ryzen 5 7530U | Zen 3 | 6/12 | 2.0 / 4.5 GHz | 19 MB | 15W |
Ryzen 7,7730U | Zen 3 | 8/16 | 2.0 / 4.5 GHz | 20 MB | 15W |
Ryzen 3 7335U | Zen 3 + | 4/8 | 3.0 / 4.3 GHz | 10 MB | 15-28W |
Ryzen 5 7535U | Zen 3 + | 6/12 | 2.9 / 4.55 GHz | 19 MB | 15-28W |
Ryzen 7,7735U | Zen 3 + | 8/16 | 2.7 / 4.75 GHz | 20 MB | 15-28W |
Ryzen 5 7535HS | Zen 3 + | 6/12 | 3.3 / 4.55 GHz | 19 MB | 35W |
Ryzen 7,7735HS | Zen 3 + | 8/16 | 3.2 / 4.75 GHz | 20 MB | 35W |
In other words, while being in the 7000 series, a Ryzen 7,7730U is still built on the Zen 3 architecture that powered the Ryzen 6000.
RADEON RX 7000M: A TECHNOLOGY CONCENTRATE
The company manufactures both CPUs and graphics chips. During her presentation, she announced the Radeon RX 7000M series, which is built on the new RDNA 3 architecture. The objective is to run recent games at 1080p with the highest performance possible. AMD claims a 26% increase in performance over the previous generation.
Among the new features are the addition of AV1 encoding for creator-oriented PCs and support for DisplayPort 2.1 for external displays or VR.
A succession of fantastic commitments signed by AMD partners that we will now test with future portable PCs.
