DJI Mic 2 review: Wireless audio for content creators

Video artists of all types have long depended on the DJI Mic for a simple, professional-sounding audio setup in a small, wireless, and portable container. It makes sense: the design eliminated unsightly cables, resulting in a low-latency, high-quality experience overall. DJI has finally released a follow-up to the DJI Mic, the DJI Mic 2.

The Mic 2 does not necessarily revolutionize the concept, but it does include a number of additional capabilities that make the DJI Mic an even more appealing bundle. Noise cancellation technology is at the top of the list, followed by 32-bit internal recording and an 18-hour battery life.

But, although there are hundreds of wired mics under $50 that would function flawlessly with your phone or camera, the DJI Mic 2 costs $350. Does it accomplish enough to warrant the price?

DJI Mic 2 design

The general design of the DJI Mic 2 is same from the previous iteration of the gadget — but there are a few tweaks, and the fact that the box is basically the same is a plus.

DJI Mic 2

The Mic 2 is offered in a variety of bundles. We are examining the $349 package, which includes two microphone transmitters and one wireless receiver. It also includes a charging case, a leather carrying case, and a variety of attachments, such as pop filters, a charging cable, and an audio cord. Additional microphone transmitters may be purchased for $99 apiece if required.

The item as a whole resembles a large set of wireless earphones. That’s because charging the attachments is as simple as slotting them magnetically into the charging case. It’s quite simple.

Each transmitter is 1.81 x 1.57 x 0.86 inches and features a power and sync button on the right side, as well as a record button on the left, adjacent to a USB-C charging connector. I adore the black model’s translucent design. The receiver has a power button, a USB-C port, a headphone jack, and an audio output that may be connected straight to your camera. On top of the receiver, there is a selection wheel that may be used to control various parts of the program.

The charging case is durable and rather large, measuring 4.57 x 1.63 x 2.35 inches. It fits in large pockets, but it’s too hefty to take around all the time. LED lights on the front of the casing display the charging state, while the USB-C charging connector is on the rear.

The DJI Mic 2 looks and feels high-end, and it should be able to meet the production demands of the great majority of artists.

DJI Mic 2 usage

Most individuals will find it simple to use the DJI Mic 2. When you open the case, you’ll see the battery levels for each device. When you take a microphone and receiver out, they will connect immediately.

However, you can utilize the transmitters individually if you choose. You may record straight to the transmitter for 14 hours. Alternatively, you may connect the transmitter to a phone or other DJI device via Bluetooth. For the most part, however, I used the receiver with a camera. When used with the receiver, the DJI Mic 2 offers an astounding 800-foot range.

DJI Mic 2 audio quality

Of course, the most crucial aspect of the DJI Mic 2 is the audio quality, and the gadget sounds fantastic. I utilized the gadget mostly with a Fujifilm X-T3 camera, but I also used it with an iPhone 15 Pro Max for a more portable arrangement. When linked to a phone, you can still record stereo audio with both mics, which is a great touch.

I was really impressed by the integrated noise canceling technology. This feature must be activated in the settings, however it sounded natural and clean overall, unlike some other noise reduction technology.

Conclusions

The DJI Mic 2 is a tempting option for artists looking for a superior audio solution in a portable and user-friendly packaging. The equipment could easily be labeled as “prosumer” – that is, if you’re simply shooting fun videos on Instagram, it’s probably a little pricy. However, if you’re a professional content maker looking for a high-quality, portable microphone, the DJI Mic 2 is your best option.

The competition

The Rode Wireless Go II is the most direct competitor to the Mic 2, and it has several benefits. Notably, the Wireless Go II has a longer battery life and can record continuously. It’s also $50 cheaper. However, the Rode alternative lacks technology such as noise cancellation, which is a key distinction for the DJI.

Should I buy this?

Yes. It’s a compelling choice for content creators.
