If you use a Meta-made virtual reality headset, such as the Meta Quest 3, you may have noticed a depressing development in the last few days: it appears that the option to transfer the VR activity you’re engrossed in to a large screen via a Chromecast has been deleted.
According to Android Central and many Reddit posts, the v60 software update for Meta Quest headsets removes the ability to stream games to a Chromecast dongle connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
While Meta has not officially stated anything about this, the official literature for its headsets has been updated: “Chromecast is not fully supported with Meta Quest” the content now states.
The revised recommendation is to send the VR footage from your headset to the Meta Quest app for Android or iOS, and then to a Chromecast. The Meta Quest website allows you to transmit whatever is happening in VR to a computer.
What’s going on?
If you’re playing VR games, you don’t need to view the action on a TV screen – but if you’re playing with friends and family, it’s quite handy to be able to share what’s going on on a separate display that everyone can see.
Without an official response from Meta (or Google), we can only surmise as to why the functionality was withdrawn. It’s likely that the functionality isn’t dependable enough, or that Meta intends to direct consumers to its own apps.
Strangely, auxiliary accounts on these Meta headsets may still stream gameplay straight to a Chromecast but primary accounts cannot, implying that there is no technical cause for the feature’s removal.
