Apple just added spatial video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The functionality allows you to begin saving memories now to revisit on Apple Vision Pro when it comes. Or when you purchase one. Or when a more affordable version becomes available. Or maybe on an existing Meta Quest headset, without the need for the present workarounds!
Spatial video capturing is also likely to be a priority of iPhone 16 hardware this autumn. It might even imply a more spatial video capture-friendly camera configuration. We will see.
In any case, fresh strings of code in Meta’s Quest app for iOS show that some type of stereoscopic video playback is being created. “Meta is planning to support Spatial Videos on Quest according to code strings found in their iOS app,” claims the spatial believer behind the M1Astra account on X.
They point to four code strings in Meta’s iPhone app to support this claim:
- “Immerse yourself in your favourite memories by uploading videos on the Meta Quest app.”
- “Enable spatial video in your camera settings. {link}”
- “Upload spatial video”
- “Spatial video ready”
More allusions are thought to be linked to the planned feature, which can be viewed here.
According to David Heaney of UploadVR, while spatial video playback on Meta Quest headsets is currently feasible, formal support will significantly minimize the friction associated with playback.
Now, if only we could adapt those terrible 3D TVs from 2010 to play our spatial films. You know, those glasses that always break just before you load up Avatar for the sixth time…
