The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra display glass should be the most durable of any Android phone. Gorilla Glass Armor, which is utilized on the front and rear panels, is designed to protect against scratches and reflections. That’s excellent, but after many months of availability, users are experiencing problems with the glass, including deterioration to the display’s anti-reflective coating.
Several reports have surfaced on social media (via Android Authority) of the S24 Ultra’s display coating wearing down and, in some cases, flaking off. Images uploaded by Zaryab Khan and Piyush Baid reveal the result, which is a dusty and smudged phone. Despite how it seems, Khan claims that the screen is not scratched.

According to Baid, Samsung store personnel blamed this on ordinary usage and recommended using a screen protection. As they point out, this sort of undermines the purpose of having an anti-reflective coating. This appears to be supported by a tweet from Rajan Thakur, who reported a stain on their phone screen as a result of frequent swiping.
The question now is: Why is this happening? Any coating on a phone display will wear down with time, but we rarely hear about it this early in the phone’s life. We don’t often hear of degrading coatings appearing this awful, which is surely not good for Samsung.

The good news is that this problem does not appear to impact everyone equally, therefore it is not assured that your Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra display will deteriorate in the next weeks or months. The bad news is that if you’re going through this, it’s unclear what you can do.
Given that this phone costs $1,299 in its base configuration, that is the very last thing you want to happen. This is especially true given that the S24 Ultra is less than a year old. Here’s hope Samsung has a solution other than asking folks to buy a screen protector. And that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will not face the same issue this time next year.
