Apple Intelligence Takes Center Stage Again with iPhone 18 Pro

Apple hasn’t abandoned its AI ambitions — in fact, Siri is getting a major upgrade this fall (currently in beta), becoming what Apple calls “profoundly more personal, capable, and conversational.” Built on Apple Intelligence, the new Siri is marketed as an “entirely new version” of the long-running virtual assistant, with expanded capabilities across nearly every corner of the iPhone experience.

That means Messages, Mail, Photos, and even third-party apps will all become easier to use and interact with, thanks to a smarter Siri that finally sounds capable of catching up to Google’s Gemini.

The camera hardware is the clear star of the show

For the first time, an iPhone features a variable aperture lens — a major step forward for Apple. But if you don’t follow the Android world closely, you might assume Apple is breaking new ground here. It isn’t: several Android phones already had variable aperture lenses years before the iPhone.

Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are simply following devices like the 2023 Huawei Mate 60 and the 2024 Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Apple even beats Samsung’s flagships to variable aperture technology — technically — since Samsung’s dual-aperture Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 predate this generation by several years.

In short, this new technology on the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max lets you control the size of the primary 48MP lens opening, which determines how much light reaches the camera’s image sensor. Why does this matter? Low-light photography works best with a larger aperture (meaning a lower f-number), while shooting in direct sunlight benefits from a smaller aperture (a higher f-number) to avoid overexposure.

iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro Chip Is a Serious Powerhouse

Apple hypes up nearly every new A-series chip as the industry’s biggest performance breakthrough — and that’s not always true. But this time, the A20 Pro chip genuinely sounds special.

The A20 Pro is built on an incredibly energy-efficient 2nm process, promising a roughly 20 percent speed boost over the already impressive A19 Pro chip, along with major battery life improvements. The iPhone 18 Pro is reportedly capable of up to 36 hours of continuous video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max pushes that figure to as much as 45 hours. By comparison, last year’s iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max launched with 33-hour and 39-hour battery life claims, respectively.

The A20 Pro chip also comes with an upgraded vapor chamber, which should keep overheating in check and allow for longer, smoother gaming sessions.

iPhone 18 Pro Camera Software: What’s New

If there’s one thing Apple consistently does better than Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung, and the rest of the mobile industry, it’s optimizing new hardware with smart, often superior software features.

The same holds true for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max’s upgraded camera, which now features aperture-based image correction. This ensures photos are processed and adjusted correctly at every f-stop, in any shooting environment.

That’s not the only software improvement coming to the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max camera. Professional photographers will also get new manual controls, offering greater creative freedom over shutter speed, white balance, focus, and exposure levels.

iPhone 18 Pro Design Changes: Subtle but Noticeable Upgrades

Will next year’s iPhone 20 Pro adopt a radical all-glass, quad-curved design with no bezels and an under-display front camera and Face ID system? No one knows for sure yet. What is certain, though, is that the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max don’t look radically different from the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.

That said, since last year’s iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max already changed quite a bit on the cosmetic front compared to their predecessors, it’s nice to see the Dynamic Island shrink in size this time while also gaining new functionality.

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max now let you toggle between three live activities at once (up from two) in the Dynamic Island cutout. This suggests the new models could be slightly smaller overall than the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, even with the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes. Oddly, though, the exact product dimensions and screen sizes haven’t been officially confirmed yet.

Price and availability

Let’s not beat around the bush: the phones are more expensive than their predecessors, and that’s not great news. But remember when many expected a $300 price hike over the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max?

Thankfully, that prediction turned out to be inaccurate, as Apple’s newest iPhones start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. That pricing would have seemed unacceptable just a few years ago, but given everything that’s happened in the mobile industry recently, these price tags are surprisingly reasonable — only $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max’s original base prices.

At $1,299, the iPhone 18 Pro Max matches the price of Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, while the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro costs $100 more than a 256GB Galaxy S26 Plus.

Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, with the official release following on Friday, September 18.
