Vivo X Fold 2: Everything you need to know

Vivo is said to be finalizing the design of its newest folding smartphone. We’ve compiled all of the latest Vivo X Fold 2 rumors and reports.

When will the Vivo X Fold 2 be released?

There is no formal release date from Vivo yet, but a few distinct launch windows have been mentioned by various sources. The general agreement appears to be in April 2023.

This would be similar to the prior iteration, the Vivo X Fold, which was released in April 2022. One point of worry for Western markets is that the X Fold was a China-only model, which means it did not receive a formal global launch. You could still get it through import, but that’s always risky and costly.

We don’t know if this will be the case with the Vivo X Fold 2, but we expect that the business will make the product available to a broader audience this time.

How much will the Vivo X Fold 2 cost?

There are no concrete details about the price of the Vivo X Fold 2 when it is released. When compared to the prior version, the pricing is as follows:

  • 12GB RAM + 256GB storage: ¥8,999 (around $1,400/£1,100/€1,300)
  • 12GB RAM + 512GB storage: ¥9,999 (around $1,550/£1,200/€1,450)

With prices rising for virtually everything at the present, including technology, it’s conceivable that these already high prices will rise even further. However, it is possible that Vivo will halt the line so that people can purchase the new Fold rather than pushing their faces against the store displays in Shanghai.

What features will we see in the Vivo X Fold 2?

The major news about the Vivo X Fold 2 so far comes from the typically dependable Chinese tech correspondent Digital Chat Station. He stated that Vivo will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, which will be the first time that this chipset shows in a foldable smartphone. The Vivo X Fold was released with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, so a switch to the second iteration chip appears very probable.

According to 91Mobiles, the processor will be accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, making it the same as the initial Vivo X Fold, probably with a 12GB/512GB version to keep parity.

While the first version X Fold featured an 8.03-inch LTPO AMOLED primary display with 2160 x 1916 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, Digital Chat Station claims that this will be updated to a 2K screen in the new edition. The battery will also be upgraded, from the 4,600mAh cell in the X Fold, which charged at a maximum of 66W, to a slightly bigger 4,800mAh hour cell with a much faster 120W peak speed.

So far, there hasn’t been much information about the cameras that will be found in the Vivo X Fold 2, though GizmoChina claims that it will have a 50Mp primary camera with Sony’s IMX866 sensor and optical image stabilisation (OIS), which has already featured on several Vivo devices. This will allegedly be accompanied by two Sony IMX 663-powered 12Mp ultra-wide and Telephoto cameras.

The initial Vivo X Fold had a quad-camera array on the back, which included a 50Mp f/1.8 primary camera with a Samsung GN5 sensor and OIS, as well as a 12Mp, f/2.4 2x zoom camera, an 8Mp 5x periscope zoom camera, and a 48Mp, f/2.2 ultrawide camera.

We’re assuming that the story simply overlooked the ultra-wide camera and mixed up the Telephoto and Zoom cameras, but it’ll be interesting to see if this is the case, as the cameras were one of the X Fold’s strongest features.

For reference, here are the full specs for the original Vivo X Fold:

  • 8.03in 2K E5 AMOLED folding display with 1-120Hz refresh rate and LTPO 3.0
  • 6.53in FHD+ external display with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
  • 12GB LPDDR5 RAM
  • 256/512GB UFS 3.1 storage
  • Rear cameras:
    • 50Mp, f/1.8 main camera with OIS
    • 12Mp, f/2.4 2x zoom camera
    • 8Mp, 5x periscope camera
    • 48Mp, f/2.2 ultrawide camera
  • Selfie cameras:
    • 16Mp outer selfie camera
    • 16Mp inner selfie camera
  • Wi-Fi 6
  • NFC
  • 4600mAh battery
  • 66W wired charging
  • 50W wireless charging
