Samsung Galaxy A16 5G or A15 5G, Which one you’ll Buy?

Samsung’s Galaxy A-series is known for providing affordable phones with luxury design and dependable performance. The Galaxy A16 5G, like its predecessor, the Galaxy A15 5G, are no exceptions.

Both models are priced similarly, around £200/$200, and are aimed at people seeking good value without breaking the bank. However, the tiny distinctions between the two may impact your decision.

Here, we’ll go over the significant differences in detail, highlighting essential characteristics and our experience with them to help you decide which one to buy.

Design & Display

The Galaxy A16 5G has a slightly larger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display than the A15 5G’s 6.5-inch screen.

While both have the same 90Hz refresh rate and bright AMOLED colors and contrast, the A16 5G’s larger screen size provides a more broader viewing experience, making it a superior option for media consumption.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the A16 5G still has rather thick bezels and a teardrop notch, which feel out of date when compared to more recent options.

The A16 5G keeps Samsung’s flat-edged plastic design but is somewhat smaller (7.9mm) than the A15 5G (8.4mm).

Both phones lack an IP classification, indicating that they are not water or dust resistant.

While the A15 5G’s colorful ‘Personality Yellow’ color option adds a whimsical touch, the A16 5G provides more muted colors such as Light Green, Blue Black, and Light Grey for a sleeker appearance.

Battery Life & Charging

Battery life is an important consideration for cheap phone buyers, and the Galaxy A15 5G outperforms its predecessor (at least in our tests).

Both models include a 5000mAh battery and support 25W charging, but the A15 5G has a longer runtime.

During our testing periods, benchmark tests revealed that the A15 5G lasted more than 15 hours, whereas the A16 5G lasted only 10 hours and 24 minutes.

While light users may be able to get two days out of the A16 5G, power users may notice a reduction in efficiency.

Charging times are comparable, with both models reaching approximately 50% in 30 minutes when using a compatible charger.

However, neither phone comes with a charger, which may cause difficulties for first-time smartphone owners.

Software Updates

The Galaxy A16 5G promises six years of software updates, extending support until October 2030. In contrast, the A15 5G includes only three years of essential Android updates.

For users who intend to retain their phone for several years, the A16 5G offers a compelling incentive to choose it over the predecessor.

Both models run Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI, however neither includes advanced Galaxy AI features seen on the top Samsung Galaxy phones.

While the software experience is generally comparable, the A16 5G’s extended upgrades provide a substantially longer lifespan in terms of security and app compatibility.

Other Differences

The Galaxy A16 5G increases in thinness and display size, as previously indicated, but makes little gain in performance.

However, as is common with low-cost phones, performance remains a weakness for both.

The A16 5G’s Exynos 1330 chipset is just slightly better than the A15 5G’s MediaTek Dimensity 6100+, resulting in similar stuttering during intense workloads.

The 4GB RAM in all variants feels limited, especially when multitasking or gaming.

Both variants offer comparable camera setups, including a 50Mp main lens, 5Mp ultrawide, and 2Mp macro, as well as a 13Mp selfie camera.

However, neither provides major improvements in photo quality, especially in low-light conditions.

Price & Availability

The Galaxy A16 5G is priced at £199 in the UK, and is available from Samsung and major retailers like Amazon.

In the US, you can buy it from Samsung for $199.99.
