The Galaxy S25 is due soon, but should you upgrade?

The Samsung Unpacked winter event is almost approaching, and the Samsung Galaxy S25 range is expected to be launched next week.

The regular reservation campaign has begun, leaks are flying, and the ‘S’ series of Galaxy devices is typically released around this time of year. In short, if you enjoy these fantastic Samsung gadgets, now is the time to start thinking about upgrading.

Many people may find it difficult to decide whether or not to upgrade, as these are likely to be pricey items. As a result, I’ve put up a short guide on what to expect later this month in terms of promotions, potential new features, and my own personal opinion on whether these devices are going to be worth it.

Before we get started, keep in mind that Samsung Galaxy gadgets are normally unveiled and then made available for presale immediately following Samsung Unpacked. The next event is slated for next Wednesday, January 22nd, so these devices are literally around the corner right now.

Trade-in rebates are likely to be decent

As someone who covers the greatest cell phone discounts for AG4Tech virtually every week, I’ll tell you straight up: trade-in rebates will account for at least 90% of available promotions for prospective upgraders. You probably already know this, but rebates are the most important consideration for most people when it comes to planning an update.

Samsung has already stated that the initial preorder offerings will provide ‘additional savings of up to $1,250’. I would be shocked if this didn’t include a trade-in rebate of up to $1,000 off the Ultra ($800 off the basic S25), a free storage upgrade, and possibly a free pair of earbuds or another little gift.

The major carriers will almost definitely follow suit with similar deals upon launch. Verizon recently offered free Galaxy Watches and Samsung tablets alongside Android flagships, which was a really excellent deal that I hope returns for the Galaxy S25 launch.

These are (probably) the key features to expect

  • New chipsets
  • A focus on AI features
  • A redesign
  • A new Slim model

We recently released a fantastic roundup of rumored Samsung Galaxy S25 features, which is highly worth checking out if you want a complete rundown of everything we’re anticipating. To conclude, there are several reports indicating that the forthcoming handsets will include new chipsets, an entire redesign, maybe a new ultra-wide camera, and a slew of new AI features – because, you know, it’s 2024 and every phone needs AI now.

One of the most intriguing theories I’ve heard says that a new ‘Slim’ model may enter the lineup. This might bring the total number of versions to four, unless Samsung decides to discontinue the often neglected Plus. We recently published on some rumored Galaxy S25 Slim renders, which may provide insight into how this model will look.

Returning to the new features for the Galaxy S25, it’s fairly probable that Samsung will expand on its current emphasis on AI functions. For example, the Samsung Unpacked teaser currently includes “a true AI companion” as its key marketing spiel. Because the video shows someone using the voice assistant, Samsung is almost probably going to enhance Bixby with support for much more complicated functions.

What’s important to you?

When it comes to updating, there is no single piece of advise I can give our readers. In general, you’ll have a far better understanding of what you need from your gadget, as well as the state of your previous equipment.

Unless you’re an early adopter, individuals who already own a Galaxy S24 should be able to skip this one, in my opinion. The Galaxy S25 will undoubtedly be more powerful and feature-rich, but I don’t believe there is a single ‘killer’ feature in the rumors that justifies that price. If you can receive a free upgrade, go ahead and take advantage of it.

For those using Galaxy S23 or older devices, things become a little murkier. A Galaxy S23 in good working order is still likely to get a fair rebate via trade-in, so there’s a case for turning it in before it devalues significantly. Furthermore, the transition from older technology to newer hardware is likely to be significant if the new devices have RAM upgrades as well as a new chipset. And, if AI features are crucial to you, know that the next chipsets will be designed from the ground up to optimize AI. Many of the most recent AI capabilities will be slower or not supported at all on previous series devices.
