Roald Dahl’s iconic story about a talented (if little insane) chocolatier has already been adapted for the big screen twice. Another picture about Willy Wonka’s experiences, however, is on its way to theaters – but it is not an adaptation of Dahl’s novel, nor is it a replica of the other films. The filmmakers have opted to produce a prequel to the famous plot this time.
Learn about Wonka, who appears in the film, and what the first previews for the film look like.
When will Wonka release?
The new tale of Willy Wonka will open in cinemas just before Christmas. In the US and UK, the film is set to premiere on Friday, 15 December 2023.

The role of the young chocolatier is played by none other than Timothée Chalamet. Starring alongside him are:
- Hugh Grant – the Oompa-Loompa

What will Wonka be about?
The filmmakers haven’t divulged anything about the narrative thus far. What is certain is that Wonka relates the narrative of Willy’s childhood, when he becomes obsessed with manufacturing chocolate and sets out to master his trade.
Willy intends to start a chocolate factory after coming home, but the nefarious Chocolate Cartel stands in his way. Willy, fortunately, has the support of his new pals, including, of course, the Oompa Loompa.
Wonka is not based on any of Roald Dahl’s works. It will, however, most likely be inspired by the novels Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. The new Willy Wonka escapades will have nothing in common with the 1971 picture starring Gene Wilder or the 2005 Tim Burton version starring Johnny Depp.
Wonka, as the directors have revealed, will be a musical. Rumor has it that Timothée Chalamet, who plays the lead character, will perform up to seven musical songs.
