While the Mini, Air, and Pro models frequently receive the most attention, there is no evidence that Apple would abandon its regular model anytime soon. Indeed, a new iPad 11th-generation model could be released this year, and there have been numerous rumors about what to expect.
When will the new iPad (11th-gen) be released?
Though we saw new iPad Air and iPad Pro models earlier in 2024, there has been no evidence of the ordinary iPad 11th generation or iPad mini 7.
It was possible that one of those two, or both, might be released alongside the iPhone 16, but instead we get the Apple Watch Series 10, a new Ultra 2 colorway, and new AirPods.
We don’t know when the next normal iPad will be released, but we’re hoping for October or November.
However, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that the most recent iPad and iPad mini “won’t be coming before the end of the year at the earliest.”
How much will the new iPad (11th-gen) cost?
Here’s how previous generations of entry-level iPads were priced at their initial launch:
- 10th-gen iPad – $449/£499
- 9th-gen iPad – $329/£319
As you can see, the 10th-generation iPad was much more expensive than its predecessor, but this is unlikely to be replicated.
In the same Bloomberg story noted above, Mark Gurman believes it’ll “probably end up being a cost-reduced version of the 10th-generation model”. Assuming no downgrades (and a possible processor update), this would be fantastic news.
What specs and features will the new iPad (11th-gen) have?
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg speculated in January 2023 that the entry-level iPad update will not include significant changes, but rather merely updated internals, which could include a processor. And it remains the most likely image of the future.
Previously, Apple tipster Majin Bu predicted that the 11th-generation iPad would include an M2 chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. While this is an optimistic vision, it would imply that the present iPad Pro’s base specifications (6GB/128GB) would be inferior to this less expensive gadget.
However, the adoption of the A15 Bionic chip is the most likely addition for the 11th-generation iPad, given the practice of equipping each new entry-level iPad with a chip one generation older. The A14 Bionic chip powers the 10th-generation iPad, thus the A15 is the logical choice for the upcoming model.
Majin Bu also claims that the new iPad will have the same design as the 10th-generation model, and that accessories would remain fully compatible.
Majin Bu is known for spreading rumours from numerous sources, including Weibo, albeit the authenticity of the material varies. In the post below, he also hinted to releasing the next 11th-generation iPad in October, which we now know did not happen.
That said, the new entry-level 11th-generation iPad may see upgrades in other areas, including as support for the second-generation Apple Pencil. But it’s unclear what else might change.
However, presuming it arrives by the end of 2024 or later, the gadget may come pre-installed with iPadOS 18. This will most likely be a slightly altered version of iOS 18, which is set to arrive on the iPhone 16 series.
