Meta Quest 3 vs Apple Vision Pro: How accurate was Zuckerberg’s review?

It’s been a month since the Apple Vision Pro was released, and understandably, many views and opinions have emerged. Is this the VR-killer? Or is it just an iPad killer? Should you cross the street with your headset on? Can you utilize it to get through an eight-hour work day? what about Meta Quest 3 vs Apple Vision Pro ?

If there’s one point of view you should pay close attention to — apart from ZDNET’s comprehensive review, which will be available shortly — it’s that of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who recently took to Instagram to explain his experience with the Vision Pro and how it compares to the Quest 3, Meta’s most current VR headset. In short, Zuckerberg stated, “I don’t just think Quest is the better value; I think Quest is the better product, period.”

Should you take Meta CEO’s comments with a grain of salt? Probably, but he’s not far off the mark. The Quest 3, an indirect competitor to the Vision Pro, is indeed “seven times less expensive” — and I agree that Meta’s headset is better suited for mobile use cases like as gaming and exercise. That is not to say you should entirely dismiss Apple’s VR option, as I will explain its key advantages below.

You should buy the Meta Quest 3 if…Meta Quest 3 vs Apple Vision Pro

1. You want a headset for gaming and/or fitness

No matter how far Zuckerberg goes with the Meta Quest 3’s feature parity with the Vision Pro, there’s no denying that it’s a gaming headset, with hundreds of VR/MR titles like Beat Saber, Superhot, and Asgard’s Wrath 2, as well as a slew of third-party accessories for improved comfort, controller grip, and battery life, and PC VR support.

While the Vision Pro supports an increasing number of Apple Arcade games, not all of them take use of the headset’s better audiovisual quality or the hand-eye tracking sensors it contains. The Vision Pro is considerably more front-heavy than the Quest 3 due to the multiple computer components built in its glass and metal face piece. Early users, including myself, have raised reservations about the Vision Pro’s comfortability, particularly in more physically demanding applications such as gaming and exercise.

2. Comfort and physical controllers are priorities

That kind of fragility on the Vision Pro is missing on the Quest 3, which has a lower price tag due to Meta’s primary material choice: plastic. The Quest’s plastic housing makes it lighter and more durable. That includes the Touch Plus controllers, which make all the difference while playing games or working out in programs that need rhythmic inputs, such as Beat Saber and Supernatural.

Vision Pro offers a similar software called Synth Riders, however I’ve discovered that relying on hand-tracking isn’t optimal, especially in dimly lit areas. It doesn’t help that the Vision Pro requires an extra battery pack, which adds to the number of things to remember as you walk about.

3. The price is right

A simple calculation informs me that the $500 Meta Quest 3 is much less expensive than the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro. Zuckerberg was not incorrect to utilize it as his opening point. The pricing difference should also show you how drastically different the two headsets are, and how Apple’s competition with Meta is more of a story than anything else. Simply said, the Vision Pro is designed for computer aficionados who want to use Apple’s spatial computing platform for business, media, and communication. Quest 3 has identical features (and more), but with lower quality — whether it’s display resolution, spatial audio playback, or processing speed.

At a fraction of the price, the Quest 3’s “good enough” status should be more than sufficient for most consumers.

1. You want the clearest look into the future

I am not exaggerating here. Using the Apple Vision Pro for the past two weeks has made my tablet, laptop, and television feel out of date. I can attribute it to the headset’s ultra-premium finish, from the curvatures of the 3D glass to the clickiness of the head strap fastener, or the 4K Micro OLED displays, which can project 3D movies better than those in theaters, or the fact that I can FaceTime a friend with a Digital Persona using only my eyes and finger pinches to navigate the software. Using Vision Pro is unlike any other VR headset I’ve experienced, but I’ve also never used one that costs $3,500.

What is known as the “Apple Tax” has its advantages, including improved customer support and repair services through the hundreds of Apple Stores countrywide, one-on-one demo sessions, and, most crucially, seamless integration with the brand’s other devices and services. AirDropping data to and from the Vision Pro is as seamless as it should be, Mac Virtual Display provides your computer with a 4K panel, no matter how large or tiny it is, and watching Spatial Videos taken with the iPhone 15 Pro is the closest thing to reliving memories.

2. You’re a movie fanatic who wants the best seats in the house

The combination of Vision Pro’s Micro OLED panels and dual-driver audio pods provides one of the most immersive viewing experiences ever. From 3D versions of Avengers: Endgame and Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney Plus to sitting courtside as Giannis Antetokounmpo tramples past opponents, the Vision Pro’s audiovisual quality is arguably greater to that of a physical movie theater or basketball game. And it significantly outperforms the similar experience in Meta Quest 3.
