Starting with the Huawei Mate 50 Pro: a fantastic new addition for a photographic champion

We had half an hour with Huawei’s latest flagship, the Mate 50 Pro. Here’s a firsthand look at its picture capabilities, variable aperture, night mode, and macro mode.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the company’s latest premium phone. The Huawei Mate 40 was the most recent in this category in 2020. Unfortunately, the phone still lacks Google services, as well as 5G. So Huawei goes all out and produces a primary camera that is, to put it mildly, outstanding.

It is a module with a 50 megapixel RYYB sensor and optical stabilization that appears to be rather traditional for the Chinese company at first sight. To detect an element that is, to say the least, intriguing, you must glance at its aperture. Clearly, the sensor has a membrane that, like any typical camera body, may expand or contract to change the amount of incoming light.

WHILE NOT A FIRST, HUAWEI MOVES AHEAD :

Naturally, other companies sold phones with variable aperture before Huawei. We consider the Sony Xperia Pro-I or, more recently, the Samsung Galaxy S9. As opposed to Sony’s F/2 to F/4 aperture range, Huawei offers an aperture range of F/1.4 to F/4. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro also features 10 notches between the two maximum apertures, whereas Sony can only provide two.

In most cases, there is little interest since the camera sensors are too tiny for the amount of incoming light to have a significant impact on the outcome. Despite this, there is still an aspect of the exposure triangle (ISO, exposure, speed) that we have not yet been able to control.

On the device that we were able to hold in our hands, the blur can be seen clearly vanishing as the aperture closes. The procedure is considerably less interesting because the true gap is between the two extreme values, but the existence of a membrane still provides a little extra control that we may enjoy. Even the Camera program has an integrated “aperture” choice. You may choose from four opening settings there.

In the image, the low-light photographs appeared to be rather decent to us when compared to a Google Pixel 7 and an iPhone 14 Pro. It appeared to be competitive. With an almost immediate exposure time and without switching to night mode, the gadget is able to shoot a picture that is somewhat inferior to that of the Pixel 7 night mode. The Huawei’s 3 second exposure period, which is regrettably not configurable, allows us to enter a another dimension once the night mode is turned on. From what we could make out of it, the degree of detail retrieved is at least on par with any cador in the picture. During our test, we will have to make more judgments.

By snapping a photo of a 50 euro bill, we could also test the macro mode (visible above). We were obviously impressed there. We thought the crispness was excellent and that we could effectively tackle the topic while staying focused.

NICE DESIGN AND NOTCH :

Despite its large proportions, the phone weighs just 209 grams. Additionally, it has the quality grip one would anticipate for the price. In the palm, it feels extremely broad, and we can immediately picture ourselves comfortably watching SVoD material.

A 3D TOF sensor for secure face identification is housed in a notch that resembles the one on the front of an iPhone. The phone didn’t appear to be unbalanced despite the circular photo block on the rear.

HUAWEI MATE 50 PRO PRICE AND RELEASE DATE :

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro with 256 GB storage costs 1199 euros. It is already available for pre-order and will be available on store shelves on November 15.
