With the debut of Google’s standalone Gemini app for iPhone, I couldn’t help but wonder how it compared to ChatGPT on iPhone. There are plenty of chatbots for Apple users, and Gemini has made it even easier to use the AI helper for creativity and productivity from a mobile device. So lets see Gemini vs ChatGPT !
To decide which AI assistant provides the best experience, I put both apps through seven questions designed to judge their conversational abilities, inventiveness, productivity, and more. This is how they compare.
1. Conversational ability
Prompt: “If I were to visit Tokyo for the first time, what attractions would you recommend? Also, please look into meal options.
Gemini pleased me with extensive recommendations, highlighting lesser-known sights and even some unusual locations. It also included a variety of eating options, including sushi and street cuisine. Gemini incorporated photographs, which served to provide visual appeal to both tourist attractions and dining options. This was quite useful because a picture highlighted some of the meal titles more clearly.
ChatGPT responded more broadly, offering popular destinations, many of which were suggested by Gemini. While useful and direct, the lack of images, particularly when providing information on a location I’d never been, made this response less appealing.
Winner: Gemini, for its visuals and depth.
2. Task automation
Answer the question: “Schedule a meeting with two friends for lunch this Saturday at noon and draft a friendly email invitation.”
Gemini: Gemini completed the scheduling duty flawlessly. It launched my Google Calendar and added the lunch date to it. Before drafting the email, it asked what I wanted to say and then sent a courteous and kind email. Then it asked whether I wanted to email it right now. I was really impressed.
ChatGPT sent a well-written email but left out the bit about scheduling the lunch. Furthermore, because it does not have access to my email, if I wanted to transmit the draft, I would have had to copy and paste it into Gmail. Where the AI excelled at the writing portion, it didn’t offer integration options to streamline the process. To be fair, Google would have to open up access for that.
Winner: Gemini, it did everything I asked, making it feel like a fully automated assistant.
3. Creative output
Prompt: “Write a short, whimsical story about a lost robot who befriends a stray dog in the city.”
Gemini: Gemini’s plot was charming yet quick, leaving it without substance. Even the title was a little too clear. The character names in the narrative were charming, but while the plot had heart, it lacked imagination, causing it to fall flat.
ChatGPT: ChatGPT created a comprehensive story with loving characters and a heartwarming ending. The degree of detail made the story more interesting and memorable.
ChatGPT won this time because of its creativity and narrative ability.
4. Study assistance
Prompt: “Explain the concept of quantum entanglement in simple terms for someone with no physics background,”
Gemini offered an easy-to-understand explanation with analogies and bullet points for the main themes. If I were studying for an exam, I believe this would have helped to reaffirm my comprehension of the subject while also providing detailed material to supplement my studies. This comment appears to have been written with someone who is unfamiliar with the issue in mind.
ChatGPT also provided a good explanation, but it used more technical terminology, which was less useful than Gemini’s analogies. The concepts were clearly comprehensive, but they were more difficult to understand without comparisons.
Winner: Gemini, for its intuitive teaching style highlighting key points with the flair of a helpful teacher.
5. Image generation
Ask the question: “Create an image of a futuristic city with glowing skyscrapers and flying cars.”
Gemini’s interface with Imagen 3 enabled it to create a vivid AI image. I’d previously pitted Gemini against ChatGPT in an image shootout, and I was curious how Gemini would fare in this contest. I was really disappointed. In this situation, the image was a touch too simple and lacked creativity.
ChatGPT gave an image that matched my description far better than Gemini. The image made by the chatbot was also more vivid and inventive, bringing the prompt’s notion to life.
ChatGPT was the clear winner due to its high level of originality and bright image generating skills.
6. Real-time info
Ask the question: “What’s the traffic like in my area?”
Gemini connected flawlessly with Google Maps, displaying how long it would take me to get to my children’s school. I didn’t ask it to do that, but it was intuitive enough to provide the information. It told me how long it would take to get there and what the traffic was like. To prevent providing my actual address, I have zoomed out Google Maps in the image above.
ChatGPT did not give me a map, but it did provide a more precise breakdown of traffic within a 10-mile radius of my home. It then suggested that if I wanted more thorough information, I should consult some of the sites listed.
Winner: Gemini, for its effortless app integration and excellent performance.
7. Up-to-date news
Ask the question: “What are the top news stories at the moment?'”
Gemini: Gemini delivered top news with a brief summary of each article. It also included a list of sites to help me further research the story. Although these were likely the most popular articles in the United States, there was no mention of sports, technology, weather, or entertainment news.
ChatGPT also gave a list of top news stories that went beyond US news. I enjoyed the broader perspective and thought the solution was much more complete this way. While I may have had to go through more material, ChatGPT’s thoroughness made it a more effective chatbot for real-time data.
ChatGPT won because of its thoroughness and ability to provide real-time worldwide news.
Overall Winner: Gemini
While Gemini and ChatGPT excel in different areas, Gemini shines out because to its interaction with other Google services, language support, and educational capabilities. However, ChatGPT’s storytelling and conversational richness remain unsurpassed, making it a formidable contender for consumers who value innovation.
Nevertheless, Gemini emerges victorious. If you’re an iPhone user searching for seamless app integration, image generating, and personalized learning tools, Gemini provides a more adaptable and intuitive experience right now.
