Oppo Find N5 hands-on: The OnePlus Open 2 in all but name?

Table of Contents

The Oppo Find N5, Oppo’s most ambitious folding phone to date, will be released internationally on February 20. However, I already have one.

It means we may get an early look at the company’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold rivals, as well as speculate on how this latest addition to the Find N series will affect the highly anticipated OnePlus Open 2.

As you can see from the above teaser, Oppo isn’t hiding the existence of the Find N5, and the company’s willingness to seed devices to media and tease crucial features about the handset demonstrates their confidence in the product’s potential to impress.

I mention this mainly because, as of now, while I have the Find N5, I am unable to divulge any of its specifications or other details beyond what the business has previously publicly said until after it launches on February 20th.

The standout feature is its slim profile, which is only slightly thicker than the USB-C port (which measures 2.6mm) integrated into its base. While not confirmed, it appears to be the world’s thinnest ‘book-style’ foldable, surpassing the Honor Magic V3 – a distinction that distinguishes the N5 from the even slimmer (3.6mm when fully opened) tri-folding Huawei Mate XT, which I tested in September and is set to be released internationally on February 18.

Despite its wafer-thin profile, the Find N5 feels pleasingly solid in the hand, as Oppo’s Billy Zhang has stated that it is the company’s strongest yet. (his social media header image also depicts the N5 as thinner than a standard graphite pencil).

Meanwhile, Oppo CPO and OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau revealed that the Find N5 is IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 certified against various types of water intrusion.

Lau’s evident interest in the Find N5 bodes well for his company’s next folding phone, the rumored OnePlus Open 2. Assuming OnePlus follows the same strategy as it did with its first foldable, the original OnePlus Open (which shared the majority of its design, hardware, and software with the Oppo Find N3 that debuted around the same time), the Find N5 is a promising looking donor device.

Despite its noticeable waistline, the Find N5 keeps a three-stage tactile alert slider, implying that the OnePlus Open 2 would most likely do the same. The volume rocker is located high on the right side, and it is anticipated that the Open 2 will share the N5’s Hasselblad-tuned back triple camera system, which includes a periscopic telephoto sensor.

Separately, Lau has emphasized the reduced crease on the phone’s main foldable display, which I’ve photographed against the light in the slideshow above to show how noticeable it is. The sample I photographed is in Cosmic Black, however the official teaser video at the top of the page shows the Misty White variant, which has a polished silver frame and a patterned back.

We also know that the Find N5 will run the company’s current ColorOS 15 user experience on top of Android 15, just like its recent Find X8 series flagship candybar phone line. Similar to the OnePlus 13, the Open 2 will run OxygenOS 15.

In terms of foreign releases, while the Find N5’s introduction is portrayed as a global release, Oppo phones are not widely available in large areas like as the United States, but OnePlus are.

So, even if the Find N5 isn’t available where you’re based, it’s possible that the extremely similar Open 2 will be.
